The “Phishing” Scam
“Phishing” is a scam where some people are sending you unsolicited “e-mail” that is an attempt to get you to reveal your credit card number, user name and passwords or other sensitive information. These thieves are fishing for those few people who are naive and gullible enough to give out information that will allow the thieves to steal from them buy using their credit card numbers or bank information or other sensitive information. The unsolicited “e-mail” looks very official and it seems very urgent and important. The objective from the “phisher” is to entice you into revealing personal information. Germany’s biggest retail bank is imposing a limit of 3,000 euros on online transfers in an attempt to protect customers against unsolicited “e-mail” Phishing scams. The Bank of Thailand has directed all financial institutions to strengthen the security of their Internet banking operations. Another scam works when you do a “Search” for something to buy. For example, a person does a “Search” for “hotels in Bangkok.” You will find the websites of several on-line companies that sell discount hotel rooms in Bangkok. I do this all the time and have never had a problem. I use the same website each time. The possible scam is when a phony or fake website offers a discount and never intends to deliver the product or service. Their objective is to get your credit card number, name, address and e-mail address and any other information that they can to steal your identity. If you have a good credit card rating they might start attempts to get your social security number or other official identification number. In most countries the credit card company will protect you. You won’t have to pay for the theft from your credit card all alone. You pay for it by higher interest rates on any outstanding loan or thru monthly service fees. There is only so much that banks and other legitimate companies can do to protect you. Be aware. Be informed. Pass on this information about the “Phishing” scam. Live long and prosper.
