Slow down! Burping, belching and heartburn sufferers may not have to avoid the fatty and spicy foods that cause them such discomfort. Research suggests that if sufferers eat slowly, they may reduce or even eliminate symptoms. Researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina measured gastroesophageal reflux on 20 healthy volunteers who downed a chicken sandwich, chips and a soft drink in five minutes one day. Another day, they took 30 minutes to eat the same meal and lowered the number of gastroesophageal reflux episodes by an impressive 40 per cent. The stomach naturally expands to take in food as you eat. But do it too fast and your stomach stretches too fast, with gastroesophageal reflux the end result, says gastroenterologist and study co-author Radu Tutuian. “We’re not sure if eating too fast causes chronic heartburn, but it makes sense that people who experience heartburn should eat more slowly,” he says. Live long and prosper. PS. The risk of a heart attack is four times greater after eating a heavy meal according to the American Heart Association.
